Migraines: My Journey to Overcoming Migraine Headaches

Migraines: My Journey to Overcoming Migraine Headaches

Growing up, I remember having the occasional headache, especially after sports games. My mum used to say that I wasn’t drinking enough water. I tried to stay hydrated as much as I could, but the headaches never stopped, I just got used to living with them. I remember my mum having severe headaches and later on learned that she suffers from migraine headaches too. Migraines are so debilitating! This is the migraine story of my life. No more migraines!

Here’s My Journey with Migraines

As I got older and started working, the headaches got more frequent and increased in severity. All that helped was taking a bunch of over-the-counter pain tablets.

I used to get around 15 to 20 headaches a month and the worst thing about it was the fact that this would become my new normal.

About 10 years ago I experienced my first migraine
About 10 years ago I experienced my first migraine headache, it was intense pain in my head, neck, and eyes. I was 23 at the time. I remember feeling nauseous and only wanting to lie in my bed.

A hand full of pain tablets did the job and after a couple of hours of sleep, I was on my feet again. Although a bit fragile, I could at least carry on with my day.

The scary thing was that these isolated migraines became more frequent and more severe as time passed. It was normal for me to have 2 different migraine prescriptions as prescribed by my Doctor.

During the last two years, I suffered from migraines at least once a month and took medicine for the migraines every time they happened. I had to live with this monkey on my shoulder, taking off work regularly, canceling social outings, and missing the occasional family activity. I hated it.

Migraines and pain relief

One of my friends is a Chiropractor and I have been for many neck and back adjustments, to no prevail. Dry needling was the next step, but it never seemed to hit the spot. I’ve tried to cut out sugar, coffee, beer, and certain foods, exercise more, and exercise less, but nothing helped.
Someone told me that my pillows were the cause and this resulted in me purchasing many different types of pillows, but it had no effect. I recently went for acupuncture and Chinese medicine, but the day after receiving acupuncture, I had a migraine. What! All I wanted was for someone or something to treat my migraines.

Migraines and MRI scans

My Doctor recommended that I go for an MRI scan, which I did. The results came back with no abnormalities present and that’s when I started researching medical marijuana, but I never actually tried it – although that was my next step.
My last migraine headache was my worst by far, I woke up with a headache like so many other days before. I tried to ride it out, but by 10 am I had to take my first migraine concoction. It was too late and I was a man down. I’ve never experienced this constant and ever-present pain before.

I was vomiting and the migraine medication didn’t want to work. This carried on into the evening, and at around 8 pm my wife took me to the hospital. There they checked all my vital signs and did a stroke, meningitis, and nerve tests. Finally at around 11 pm, after consuming more painkillers the pain died down and I was able to go home.

No more migraines!

The next day was when My Migraine Secret was discovered. I was scrolling through my Facebook and saw an article about migraine headaches.
Someone mentioned that they’re busy experimenting with natural supplements to get rid of migraines, and they think that they’ve found the answer! At that stage, I was desperate to try anything so I clicked on the link.

What is My Migraine Secret?

A long story short, the experiment was based on including two natural ingredients in your diet. Those two ingredients are garlic and L-Arginine. Is that it? Yup. It sounds too good to be true right? Well, as I said before, at that stage of my life I was desperate to try anything so I asked my wife to go to the pharmacy and buy me some garlic and L-Arginine tablets. I started taking them every morning and…….

And honestly, it’s been working wonders for me. In the past year, I’ve probably only had one or two migraines. Remember that I was getting one migraine per week? So only getting two migraines in one year is truly an amazing feeling.

Now I know that everyone is different and everyone’s migraine stories are different. What works for one might not work for the other. If you have another remedy for migraine headaches that work, please send it to us. We would love to share your story with the world.

What are migraines?

A migraine is a type of headache that can cause severe pain, as well as other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are often described as pulsing or throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, but they can occur on both sides. They can last for several hours or even days and can be debilitating for those who experience them.

Migraines are believed to be caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation in the face and head. These changes can cause the blood vessels in the head to expand, leading to the symptoms associated with migraines. Certain triggers such as stress, hormonal changes, certain foods, and even changes in the weather can cause migraines.

Understand Your Triggers

Learning to identify and understand your migraine triggers is an important step in improving your quality of life. For me, stress was a major factor, so I began practicing relaxation techniques and managing my environment better. Monitoring my diet and sleeping patterns also helped – for example, I found that consuming too much caffeine or not getting enough sleep resulted in a higher chance of experiencing a migraine.

Make Healthier Lifestyle Choices

Recognizing the triggers causing my migraines was half of the relationship, the other part was learning how to make better lifestyle choices. I started eating healthier and making sure to get all of the vitamins and minerals my body needed through a balanced diet. I also built a regular exercise routine into my daily schedule and practiced yoga for relaxation and stress relief, which made a huge impact on managing my migraines.

Manage Stress Levels Effectively

Stress is one of the most common triggers of migraine episodes, and managing your stress levels can be instrumental in reducing frequency and severity. To effectively manage my stress, I practiced meditation and mindfulness, both of which have proven to be powerful tools. Taking even just 15 minutes a day out of your schedule to find peace can make a big difference. I also set aside time for self-care, such as getting regular massage therapy sessions or simply taking leisurely walks around town.

Experiment with Alternative Treatments

In addition to the strategies I already mentioned, I also experimented with alternative treatments such as acupuncture and craniosacral therapy to help ease the symptoms of my migraines. Acupuncture helps boost circulation, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to get to your muscles and relieving tension. Craniosacral therapy works by manipulating the bones in your head and spine to reduce compression which can lead to headaches. Both of these alternative therapies proved helpful for me in reducing migraine episodes.

CEFALY drug free migraine treatment

Cefaly is a device that is used as a non-invasive treatment option for migraines. It is a small, battery-operated device that is worn on the forehead and is designed to prevent migraines before they occur. The device is worn for 20 minutes per day and works by applying a small electrical current to the forehead, which is thought to stimulate certain nerves and reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Cefaly is a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device, which means it uses electrical current to stimulate the nerves and muscles. It’s been approved by FDA and Health Canada for the preventative treatment of migraine headaches in adults. It’s been shown to be effective in reducing the number of migraine attacks, as well as the intensity and duration of migraines when they do occur.

It’s considered a safe alternative for people who do not want to take medication or who have not found relief with medication. It is important to note that Cefaly is not a cure for migraines and should be used in conjunction with other treatment options such as medications, lifestyle changes, and alternative therapies. Before using Cefaly, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if it is the right treatment option for you.
