Total cholesterol numbers are very important when assessing your risk for cardiovascular disease, normally we go to our doctors and have a lipid blood test done, the sample is sent to the laboratory and you wait to get your total cholesterol results.

This is quite time consuming and you may want to keep a check on your total cholesterol levels more regularly, why not consider a Total Cholesterol Blood Test Home Kit.

Having a Total Cholesterol Blood Test Home Kit from Amazon is a convenient and simple way to keep track of your total cholesterol in the comfort of your own home.

I have included a Cholesterol Levels Chart where you can check what should your cholesterol be in mmol.

Cholesterol levels in adults

It is recommended by the American Heart Association that both male and female adults should start having their cholesterol checked starting at the age of 20, following that it should be checked every 4 to 6 years until the age of 40. After that age your doctor will use an equation to work out your risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke over the next 10 years.

It is recommended that women have their cholesterol checked every year after age 45, it is recommended that men have it checked every 5 years after age 35.

If you are a smoker, if heart disease runs in the family or you have diabetes it is recommended to start having your cholesterol checked after 20 years of age. Believe it or not cholesterol levels start to elevate after age 20.

Cholesterol Levels go up as we age

Cholesterol levels tend to go up as we age especially in the male population, after entering the menopause a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease will increase. For people with high cholesterol levels it is recommended to have more regular testing.

By trying to keep your cholesterol at a normal level earlier in your life means less problems as you age, watching what you eat, exercising and keeping stress levels under control are three of the most important things that you have control over that will have an effect on your total cholesterol levels.

These are the steps that doctors recommend you take earlier in life to reduce the chances of high cholesterol developing, high cholesterol affects millions of people if it isn’t managed properly earlier in life it can be much harder to treat.

What does Total Cholesterol Mean?

Total cholesterol is a measurement of all the cholesterol in your blood, all cholesterol means the good cholesterol HDL (high density lipoprotein) and the bad cholesterol LDL (low density lipoprotein),

HDL or good cholesterol assists in removing cholesterol from your arterial system

LDL or bad cholesterol builds up and clings to your arterial wall causing a blockage in your arteries.

Triglycerides are a form of fat that contribute to a build-up of plaque in your arteries, especially in women

Non-HDL is a number that comes from a combination of your LDL and VLDL or very low-density lipoprotein

It can be a bit confusing, just remember the lower your LDL the less chance you have of having heart attack or stroke.

What do the Cholesterol Numbers mean?

Your cholesterol numbers are measured in mg/dl or milligrams per decilitre, here is a cholesterol chart to help you understand where your numbers should be based on your age and gender.

  1. Greetings Fintan,

First of all, I want to thank you for sharing your passion to the world!

I really enjoyed reading your article. This information is very informative. I am a geriatric nurse for over ten years. I can surly relate to cholesterol levels especially in the geriatric population. The aging process can not be put on pause. But, we can improve our diet intake. The right diet can improve or keep up a healthy cholesterol level. Being able to check your cholesterol level at home is a bonus. It should also promote a healthy diet intake.

Keep up the great work! I’ll be surly re-visiting your website!

I love to see other sharing their knowledge and their honest experiences too others.

    Much thanks

    • Thanks Rebecca, high cholesterol has plagued me personally for over 40 years so it is convenient to be able to do a blood cholesterol test at home

  2. Hi great article that is worth brining to people’s attention.

It is a subject that is close to my heart. After a medical check at the age of 40 I found out I had extremely high cholesterol

It shocked me  when the doctor said he was surprised I hadn’t had a heart attack by now.  I never even knew the first thing about this subject or let alone that I actually had high cholesterol.

The outcome of this story I Now need to take a daily tablet, for the rest of my life , to keep it under control.

I would say to anyone reading this article take note of what it is saying, get the home test kit. Get yourself checked out. This is a silent and hidden disease that could be very harmful to you health and well-being.

I ate a lot of rich foods so do you think this could have caused my high cholesterol?

Take care and best wishes to you.

    • Hi Matthew,

Fatty foods contribute to high cholesterol levels, by eating more healthy foods you reduce your chances of developing heart disease.

  3. Hey there,

I’ve never had any kind of problems whatsoever with any cholesterol type. I usually do my analysis at a lab, and I wasn’t aware of Home kits. Not until I saw the documentary about Theranos “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley”, that is. Have you tested this home kit’s results against professional labs’ results?

  4. This is a very interesting item. Hmm.

You mention that the tester is for total cholesterol, and you give a nice explanation of all the different lipid fractions. I see the tester gives readings for total, hdl and triglycerides, which is great to see as TAG is an important number to know. Does it give the total:HDL ratio as well as just the numbers? As this is also clinically important.

I’d also be interested to know what health professionals think of this one before buying it, any endorsements from reputable professionals? And any explanation of how people should interpret the results or what action to take based on their results? Very curious to find out more.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Emily,

As far as I can see from reading all the customer questions on Amazon there is no mention of total HDL ratio, regarding what health professionals think of the product, it is designed for home testing the information on the product mentions that

Near central-lab-result quality in less than 2 minutes

I know that to get an accurate cholesterol result there are a number of factors at play, for example length of time fasting before testing, was any food taken, did the person follow the instructions carefully etc.
